At Vancouver Chiropractic, a large percentage of our patients are families and therefore, we are fortunate to see many children. Based on my experience, I see how common spinal dysfunction is in young children and teens. You only need to watch a group of children walking to school to see why.
One thing that stresses the spine and the body are large, bulky backpacks that hang from one shoulder. Whether the load is books, a musical instrument, or a hockey bag, it can disrupt the natural alignment of the spine if not supported properly. This may affect spinal positioning during growth spurts as well as cause unexpected biomechanical symptoms. If back related problems are left undetected or untreated, this can lead to progression of symptoms such as headaches and neck pain due to imbalance of muscle/spinal joints causing weakness or overcompensation.
